The core components of the MAGE system are the required devices to run a basic MAGE gaming session, which is a lasertag-like combat action. Refer to the documentation for specifications, communication protocols and development documentation.

The Nexus acts as a hub for user devices to interact with the system. User-wearable equipment links to the rest of the system using the Nexus: the Nexus relays information produced by the devices to the server, and vice versa. The Nexus communicates with the server using XBee, and the devices interface with the Nexus using CAN.

The headband unit is the primary sensing equipment that receives IR signals emitted from various devices within the system and forwards it to the Nexus to be processed. An example is to receive ranged attack by other players. The headband also displays the player's health.

The reference IR weapon emits a programmable IR signal to be used for either baseline game or as a testing peripheral.
